The WSEE TV Read’n Feed Book & Food Drive promotes literacy, life long learning, and concern for others in our community. The goal of the WSEE TV Read’n Feed Book & Food Drive is feeding minds and feeding bodies. During Read’n Feed events, WSEE staff members visit the schools and read to the students. We then ask the students, faculty and the community to donate new and gently used children’s books, book store gift cards and cash, for school libraries. We also ask them to donate non-perishable food items and cash to support the Second Harvest Food Bank of Northwest Pennsylvania.

The WSEE TV Read’n Feed Book & Food Drive began in 2004 with a single school, at our Adopt-A-School, Edison Elementary. During the 2007-2008 school year, the WSEE TV Read’n Feed Book & Food Drive expanded across the City of Erie School District to include; Edison, Lincoln, McKinley, Wayne, Roosevelt, Grover Cleveland, JoAnna Connell, Jefferson, Strong Vincent, Diehl and Perry. All participating schools have special Learn’n Serve teachers and students who volunteer their time and talents for projects that get the kids involved in community service. During the 2007-2008 school year, the WSEE TV  Read’n Feed Book & Food Drive collected  11, 461 pounds of food for the Second Harvest Food Bank of Northwest, Pennsylvania and  5, 391 books for school libraries in the City of Erie School District.

The 2008-2009 WSEE TV Read’n Feed Book & Food Drive began on Thursday, November 6th, 2008 at Edison Elementary School. This school year the program is expanding to include 17 schools in the City of Erie School District. On Read’n Feed Day Edison Students were encouraged to bring a can of food or a book or both. On November 6th, Edison students and faculty collected 1, 036 pounds of food for the Second Harvest Food Bank ! We’re off to a great start for 2008-2009.

All participating Read’n Feed schools are offered incentives to help the hungry in our community and their schools. The class that brings in the most donations of non-perishable food items and cash donations for the Second Harvest Food Bank wins a Weather Day with Ray. WSEE Meteorologist Ray Petelin loves to teach kids what he knows about the science of weather and brings his tornado machine along for a fun lesson.

The class that brings in the most books, book store gift cards and cash donations for school libraries, wins a visit from Therapy Dogs United. Therapy Dogs United is a non-profit organization where specially trained dogs and their owners make visits to hospitals, nursing homes and schools. Their goal is to educate and demonstrate the unique animal-to-human bond.

This year is our 5th Annual WSEE TV Read’n Feed Book & Food Drive and our goal is to surpass last year’s totals, bringing more books and more food to those who need them.
