Nearly 3 dozen members of a Warren County church are now recovering from the effects of carbon monoxide poisoning. The incident has been traced to the chimney at the 125-year old Hessel Valley Lutheran Church in Chandlers Valley. Most of the victims, both children and adults had relatively mild symptons including headaches and nausea. And even 4 victims flown to a Pittsburgh Hospital responded well to treatment. Only 2 were still hospitalized today. Crews today looked at the natural gas furnace and chimney and determined the chimney was partially blocked with debris. The blockage allowed the carbon monoxide fumes to seep into both the church and fellowship hall

An Erie County judge today sentenced a young Erie man to life in prison without the possibility of parole for the brutal stabbing and beating death of an elderly woman. Willie Baker, 23, pleaded guilty to second degree murder for the death of 86 year old Anne Ropelewski. As part of the plea bargain deal, 10 other criminal charges were dismissed. Prosecutors had intended to seek the death penalty if the case had gone to trial. But they were concerned Banker may have been declared mentally disabled making him ineligible for the death penalty. Judge John Trucilla said, "This is one of the most vicious and predatory killings in our community history." Erie Police had said the victim was stabbed 22 times, and beaten with a hammer.

Renovations for Strong Vincent?

Erie School directors next week will consider renovating and repairing several school buildings. The board hopes to finance the project using federal stimulus funds to obtain no-interest construction bonds. Directors say their top priority is a $39 million renovation-expansion project at 80 year old Strong Vincent High School. The original roof now badly leaks despite repairs and patches. The leaks cause water damage to classrooms and hallways. Wind, rain and snow have also combined to cause extensive damage to brick work and the facade. The project would fix all the damage and install a new roof. Plans also call for a major upgrade to athletic facilities including new locker rooms and replacing 2 small gyms with a regulation size facility allowing teams to practice and play games at the school.

A group of Great Lakes governors are expected at the White House Monday to carp about Asian carp, the species of "jumping" fish believed to be entering the lakes from the Mississippi River. Those carp can eat too much of the food supply which could endanger other fish key to tourism like perch and walleye.
Governor Ed Rendell has declined the White House invite citing a major budget speech planned for the next day.

Gannon Dorm Project Moving Forward

Gannon University can now move ahead with plans to build the first new dorm in more than 20 years. Erie City Council today gave final approval to a zoning change that allows the project to proceed. City Council in December had delayed the plans because of parking concerns. But Gannon then formally agreed to one on-site parking spot for every 4 students plus visitor parking. So council today unanimously approved the zoning change. Now Gannon can go forward to plans to construct the new dorm on university owned vacant land along West 4th Street. And 2 more dorms could be built nearby in the coming years. Gannon hopes the first new dorm will be open for students in the fall of 2011. The dorm would have 200-250 beds in suites.

Maintenance Agreement

Erie City Council today approved a 5-year agreement turning over maintenance of many key bayfront parcels to the Erie Port Authority. The areas include the bayfront promenade, the bayfront bike path, the Land Lighthouse, a section of lower State Street and Ravine Drive. The Port Authority says the deal is not a payment in lieu of taxes. But it clearly is a big cost savings to city government. The authority will also donate police cars worth $300,000 to the city over the next 5 years.

Sheriffs Department Layoffs in Ashtabula County

More than 2 dozen employees at the Ashtabula County Sheriffs Department, including 16 deputies, are being laid off, effective Wednesday because of the county's major budget problems. Sheriff William Johnson says cutting the deputies will mean far fewer patrols. He will cut the number of cars patrolling 27 townships in the county from 4 to 1 per shift. The county is trying to trim costs to deal with less revenue. The Sheriffs Department is being cut by more than $1 million. While there is no immediate solution, there is a move to put a referendum on the ballot this year to increase the county sales tax. If that happens, and the measure passes, the additional money could allow the county to call back the laid off employees.

Fewer Signals-More Stop Signs

A study is now underway to determine if the City of Meadville should remove more traffic signals. In the past 2 years, 4-way stop signs have replaced traffic signals at 7 intersections in Meadville. City engineers say the switch has improved traffic flow. And there is also a cost-savings in electricity and the upkeep of lines and controllers. So planners are considering making the switch at 6 more intersections with low traffic volume. But first they will await the results of a PennDOT study of traffic and pedestrian safety. That study is expected to be done in March.
